There are smiles under the face masks at Cornwall Hospice Care as supporters show their appreciation

Supporters of Cornish healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care have raised a massive £46,458 via the annual Summer Raffle.  This will pay for their medical supplies for 3 months. There were 26,727 entries and now 13 lucky winners are celebrating.

Sarah Vincent, Lottery Manager at the charity, says;” The raffle takes weeks of organising and it’s heart-warming to see all the entries come flooding in from supporters who enter from all over Cornwall and beyond.

One of my favourite parts of my work is making the phone calls to the lucky winners.  The call to our £2,000 1st prize winner had a special meaning. Lisa Hocking from Redruth answered ‘Oh my god, this is amazing I’m completely shocked.  It’s the anniversary of my Mum’s death today.  She passed away 4 years ago at St Julia’s Hospice.  I’ll never be able to repay Cornwall Hospice Care for the amazing care she had at the end of her life.  We normally go to the beach on the evening of the anniversary and open a bottle of bubbly to raise a glass to my Mum, Susan Gates.  Tonight will be extra special’.  I was very moved as I’m sure you can understand.”

This is how Carol Clough from Truro reacted to the news that she was a winner; “Oh my goodness shall I get the brandy?” Carol won the 2nd prize of £500.

The 3rd Prize of £250 went to Ann Medlin from Truro who commented; “Oh wow, thank you.” All 10 winners of £25 had similar words of joy and thanks.

Sarah adds; “Life has changed dramatically for us all, including the key nursing workers at our hospices, St Julia’s in Hayle and Mount Edgcumbe in St Austell.  Our doors, wards and 20 beds have remained open throughout the pandemic and this is thanks to the generosity of the people in Cornwall.

Our nurses are still caring, smiling and comforting patients and families under their shields and masks and find it hard knowing the difference that a comforting hug can make to someone, particularly when they may be scared or when they have just lost a loved one, yet can’t offer one right now.

Our fundraising has also changed dramatically too and sadly lots of events have been cancelled and our shops closed during lock-down to keep our staff, volunteers and customers safe.

Luckily our supporters were ready to take on new challenges in lock-down and hundreds took part in our first virtual ‘Your marathon Your Pace’ event.  They also cleared their cupboards and donated items to our first ever Drive Through Donation Centres.”
